Accurate Safety Data
For industries reliant on accurate safety data for combustible fluids, the Cleveland Open Cup (COC) test remains one of the most respected methods for determining a liquid’s flash point. As part of Dynalene’s commitment to providing accurate and reliable data, this blog post breaks down the essentials of the Cleveland Open Cup test, supported by a demo video to illustrate how this test is conducted.
Why is Flash Point Important?
Flash points provide critical information about the safety of flammable and combustible materials, which is essential for product transportation, storage, and regulatory compliance. By knowing the flash point, organizations can determine the conditions under which a material is safe to handle. Additionally, it helps manufacturers comply with federal safety regulations and optimize safe operating procedures in various industrial applications.

To offer a clearer view of how the Cleveland Open Cup test operates, Dynalene has prepared a demo video to guide you through each step. This video demonstrates the procedure’s setup, the role of the heating process, and how the flash point is identified—all with precision and safety in mind.
How Does the Cleveland Open Cup Test Work?
In the Cleveland Open Cup test, a small sample of the liquid is placed in an open cup. The sample is then slowly heated, and a small flame is passed over the liquid surface at regular temperature intervals. When the vapor concentration reaches an ignitable level, a small flame or “flash” appears, indicating the flash point. This temperature is carefully recorded as the flash point of the liquid.
The Cleveland Open Cup method is particularly suited for oils, fuels, and other liquids with moderate to high flash points, generally above 79°C (174°F). It’s less suited for very low flash point fluids, which are better measured in closed-cup flash point tests.
